HH327: Aging-Triage Theory

HH327: Aging-Triage Theory

Today, I want to share with you the triage theory, which is very similar to the disposable Soma theory that I talked about in the last episode. However, in this case, it's talking about the body having a limited pool of nutrients and energy that it can allocate towards different functions, including growth, maintenance, and defense.

Melissa Deally:

Welcome back to another edition of health hack as I continue to talk about theories of aging this week. So today, I want to share with you the triage theory, which is very similar to the disposable Soma theory that I talked about in the last episode. However, in this case, it's talking about the body having a limited pool of nutrients and energy that it can allocate towards different functions, including growth, maintenance, and defense. And when things are going well, and we're fueling our body well, and we have good nutrients going in, and we have good energy, then the body can allocate resources to all of those areas. However, when resources become scarce, that's where we can run into problems, because now the body has to prioritize where it's going to allocate the resources. And it may be allocating resources for the now at the expense of long term health. And that's where we can get into, you know, premature aging, dis ease of the body, et cetera. And very often, this can happen when we're under high amounts of stress, because when we are under high amounts of stress, the body will very often the allocating resources towards our immune system, at the expense of other functions, such as DNA repair, or cellular maintenance. And over time, this can then lead to a buildup of damage and deterioration in the body, which can then lead to an increased risk of age related diseases. So that's the triage theory. So again, I share this with you because so often we just go about living our lives. And we don't necessarily think about the fact that our sleep or exercise, our our food, or nutrition, all of our lifestyle factors are actually nutrients, fuel energy for our body, so that our body can do everything that we demand of it. And we don't think about just how much we demand of it. And when we start to make choices that aren't fueling our body in a way that it needs, we see that effect down the line a year, five years, 10 years down the line. So what you do today really does matter to your health, and longevity. So how are you fueling your body
