I know the power of this word, I love to hear the impact these conversations have. Okay, let's get into it. The number one rule of high performance is taking personal responsibility. In any field of life. If you are making excuses or placing blame on external circumstances or situations, you remove all possibility of creating your best performance. Ultimately, only you're responsible for your performance. Sure, there are different things that are going to impact how you perform externally. But how you react to those that are going to be crucial. I found it fascinating the different approaches to the recent controversial finish to the second test in the ashes with the English getting particularly upset at one particular dismissal. Because of this concept of it being outside of the spirit of the game. Now whatever you believe about whether the right decision or the wrong decision was made, ultimately, the reaction from both teams was starkly different. The English fans, the English players, coaching staff, have all made it about the decision of the other team. And we would never have done that. And it been a yes, it's in the rules. But it's not in the spirit of the game. Not once overheard one of them say, the batsman actually did the wrong thing, he should have been more cautious in making sure he stayed in his ground. Because ultimately, if he'd done that nothing, there's no other drummer after that. He was casual. And, and one of the first things you learn in cricket, when you're batting is to make sure you're in your crease until the ball is dead. So the fundamentals of batting where was the talk of Yeah, he did the wrong thing he should have, he should have been more cautious, he should have been more careful. I heard plenty of the commentary, including the English X players say exactly that, that he he should have. It was actually lazy cricket. Whereas the Australians, again, whatever you believe about their decision on how they acted, they have talked about since then, particularly the captain doubling down on we would have made the reaction that let's look at what we can do to change that our batsman didn't stay in his ground, I'd be disappointed as the captain is being I'd be disappointed the fact that he didn't, and that he should have made a different choice. And that's what they've continued to talk about the whole way through is making sure that the focus is on well what can we change? What can we do differently? And I really I really liked the approach of saying, well, it's really just a non event. And the incident itself happens over and over again. It's He's surprised by the reaction and I'm surprised to be honest to ultimately, regardless of what you think of the decision, regardless of what you think of circumstances outside of your control, it always comes back to what can you do to change? How could you have managed that situation differently? How could you have been better in that situation? Because then you get your power back then you have that ability to improve then you have the ability to reach your best performance We can't do that if you're giving up your power, if you're giving up control to others and you are blaming or placing responsibility for your success on other people in other people's hands.

So, in whatever circumstances, you're in whatever situation and you're wanting to perform better, take full ownership, take full responsibility, focus on what you can control. I love the expression control the controllables. Because when you control the controllables, then you determine the destiny, you determine the future you determine your performance. And for the record, I'm quite happy with how it all played out. The the stomping was performed as in real time, as soon as he caught it threw the stumps down. The batsman clearly jumped the gun. To my mind anyway. And I will say this, there was a man moment the day before with a catch which I thought from my experience would have been out, but also see that the rules have changed. And it's very clear on that not being so cool. I don't want the rule but it's the rules to play on. And I think that's how Australia approached that. That decision in the previous day. They really weren't happy with it. They thought it was wrong, but it's in the rules so they went with it. Interestingly, that is part of the spirit of the game abiding by the boys decision and carrying yourself in the right manner. Interesting. I hope you enjoyed this episode of The Grief Code podcast.
