The R.E.A.L. Connection System: How to Build Authentic Relationships in Business | RR344
As we step into a new year, I decided to begin with something close to my heart — connection. This solo episode is all about how we can start 2026 by building and strengthening R.E.A.L. relationships: those built on trust, appreciation, and genuine human care.
A personal story from my husband’s recent surgery reminded me that kindness and connection show up in unexpected ways, and that people remember how we make them feel. From that experience grew this reflection on the R.E.A.L. Connection System, the framework I teach to help people and businesses stay connected in meaningful ways:
Refresh. Engage. Appreciate. Leverage.
In this episode, I walk through each of these pillars and how they show up in real life, from refreshing your LinkedIn presence, to engaging intentionally online and offline, to showing appreciation in ways that leave a lasting impression.
Key Takeaways
- Refresh your presence so your online identity reflects who you are today, not who you were years ago.
- Engage with intention — show up where your people are and participate meaningfully.
- Appreciate authentically — small gestures can create emotional anchors that last for years.
- Leverage relationships — trust creates opportunity, and every introduction or referral begins with connection.
- Choose one pillar to focus on this year — start simple and stay consistent.
When you build your business from a place of genuine care, everything else unfolds more naturally.

Steve, welcome to a brand new year of the
Janice Porter:relationships rule podcast. I am so grateful that you are here
Janice Porter:with me today as we step into a new year with a renewed sense of
Janice Porter:clarity and intention. This past holiday season reminded me, in a
Janice Porter:very personal way, why I'm so committed to this work. As many
Janice Porter:of you know, my husband had knee replacement surgery in November.
Janice Porter:We expected a long recovery. We prepared ourselves for the
Janice Porter:practical side of things. What we didn't anticipate was the
Janice Porter:outpouring of kindness from people in our community. We were
Janice Porter:so pleasantly surprised by how many people came to visit him.
Janice Porter:Some were close friends, of course, but others were people
Janice Porter:we hadn't seen or spoken to in years. These people who simply
Janice Porter:wanted to show care and support, they their small gestures made
Janice Porter:such a difference during a challenging time, and they
Janice Porter:reminded me that connection does not always fade, even when time
Janice Porter:passes. And they reminded me how deeply people value being
Janice Porter:remembered. That experience brought me right back to the
Janice Porter:heart of my work relationships. Relationships matter. They
Janice Porter:matter more than algorithms, more than strategies and more
Janice Porter:than perfect plans. They carry us, support us, open doors for
Janice Porter:us and shape the opportunities that come our way. So today, as
Janice Porter:we begin a new year, I want to walk you through my real
Janice Porter:connection system. This is the framework I teach and the one
Janice Porter:that consistently helps my clients build businesses rooted
Janice Porter:in trust and long term relationships, R, E, A, l,
Janice Porter:refresh, engage, appreciate, leverage. I'm going to go
Janice Porter:through each one of these pieces with you, and we'll start with
Janice Porter:the first one, refresh, refresh your presence. Refreshing your
Janice Porter:presence means making sure your online identity reflects who you
Janice Porter:are today, not who you were five years ago. I really recently
Janice Porter:worked with a client who has two very well established
Janice Porter:businesses. He's someone with a strong reputation and decades of
Janice Porter:experience, but he hadn't touched his LinkedIn profile for
Janice Porter:years. His world was changing, and he was transitioning day to
Janice Porter:day responsibilities to his daughter, stepping into more
Janice Porter:advisory role and opening up space to serve other businesses
Janice Porter:through board directorship, none of that was reflected in his
Janice Porter:profile. Together, we refreshed it, we updated his headline to
Janice Porter:show this new direction. We rewrote the about section so
Janice Porter:that it spoke to the value he offers today, not the version of
Janice Porter:him from the past, and we clarified his experience and
Janice Porter:highlighted his evolving role. Within days, guess what? He was
Janice Porter:contacted by a recruiter that was exactly the outcome he
Janice Porter:wanted. He needed his online presence to do the initial
Janice Porter:positioning for him, and once it did, opportunities appeared
Janice Porter:almost immediately a refresh is not about reinventing yourself,
Janice Porter:it's about aligning your presence with your purpose. So
Janice Porter:ask yourself, does your profile show the problems you solve?
Janice Porter:Does it speak to your clients in their language? Does it
Janice Porter:represent who you are now today? When you refresh your presence,
Janice Porter:you open the door for the right people to find you. E engage
Janice Porter:with intention. Engagement is where relationships begin to
Janice Porter:form, and one of the most effective ways to engage is by
Janice Porter:putting yourself in spaces where your people are already there.
Janice Porter:Recently, I attended a community event hosted by a past podcast
Janice Porter:guest of mine. It was warm, welcoming and filled with people
Janice Porter:who were genuinely interested in learning and connecting. The
Janice Porter:speaker turned out to be another perfect guest for my podcast who
Janice Porter:I wouldn't have met if I hadn't attended that event, so you will
Janice Porter:hear his passion and expertise on visual leadership very soon,
Janice Porter:a really interesting topic, by the way. Not long after that, I
Janice Porter:went to a mastermind style event where I didn't know most of the
Janice Porter:people in the room. During the conversation, someone asked a
Janice Porter:question about LinkedIn that led someone asked a question about
Janice Porter:LinkedIn. That led to more questions, and soon I found
Janice Porter:myself offering a few tips from my LinkedIn expertise, and
Janice Porter:basically I had an audience there that I wouldn't have had
Janice Porter:before, to give them some to share some tips and tricks with
Janice Porter:them. That small act of contribution put the light on me
Janice Porter:without me trying to stand out. It created new conversations,
Janice Porter:new beginning relationships that I'm sure will continue into this
Janice Porter:year. Engagement works the same way online. When you comment
Janice Porter:thoughtfully, respond to people, share insight or ask questions,
Janice Porter:you be. Become visible in a natural way. You build
Janice Porter:familiarity. You show that you care about others, not only
Janice Porter:about your own content. Choose a simple habit this year, maybe
Janice Porter:attend one event each month where your ideal clients gather.
Janice Porter:Spend five minutes a day engaging with people in your
Janice Porter:network, either on LinkedIn, as I would do, or whichever is your
Janice Porter:favorite platform, these small actions create momentum,
Janice Porter:engagement done consistently builds relationships faster than
Janice Porter:almost anything else. A appreciate people authentically.
Janice Porter:Appreciation is where true connection is built. This is the
Janice Porter:heart of everything I teach. A few months ago, I saw someone
Janice Porter:post on LinkedIn who I hadn't spoken to in years. Her post
Janice Porter:caught my attention, so I commented. Then I also sent her
Janice Porter:a private message to say hello and let her know that her post
Janice Porter:had made me think of her. Well, it turned out that she'd been
Janice Porter:looking for someone to speak to her business organization about
Janice Porter:the power of LinkedIn. She hadn't reached out to me because
Janice Porter:in her mind, too much time had passed, but the minute I
Janice Porter:reappeared, reappeared in her world. She booked me right away
Janice Porter:for a session this month that happened simply because I
Janice Porter:reached out with appreciation. And you never know. Here's
Janice Porter:another story that illustrates the opposite side of this. A
Janice Porter:friend of mine has bought and sold three homes in 15 years,
Janice Porter:three transactions, three different realtors. You heard it
Janice Porter:right, three different realtors, not because the first one did a
Janice Porter:poor job, but because they didn't stay in touch. They
Janice Porter:disappeared after the sale, and because of that, they were not
Janice Porter:present when the next opportunity came around. On the
Janice Porter:flip side, appreciation can leave a very lasting mark. Years
Janice Porter:ago, I met someone at an event afterward, I sent her a card
Janice Porter:with a photo of the two of us I had taken on the cover. She
Janice Porter:still has that card on her desk today. She brings it up every
Janice Porter:time we speak. That card made her feel seen and valued in a
Janice Porter:way that digital messages do not always accomplish. Appreciation
Janice Porter:is powerful because it is personal. It is memorable. It
Janice Porter:shows effort. A text is nice, a comment is thoughtful, but a
Janice Porter:physical reminder, a tangible touch card, a small gesture,
Janice Porter:these create emotional anchors that people remember for years.
Janice Porter:So this year, build appreciation into your regular rhythm. Send a
Janice Porter:card each week, or even, May, dare I say, each day, record a
Janice Porter:short video for someone. Acknowledge people privately,
Janice Porter:not only publicly, send something tangible when it feels
Janice Porter:right. Appreciation is not old fashioned. It is strategic in
Janice Porter:the most human way. L leverage your relationships. Leverage is
Janice Porter:not about using people. It's about recognizing the
Janice Porter:opportunities that naturally grow from real connection when
Janice Porter:you refresh your presence, when you engage intentionally and
Janice Porter:when you appreciate people consistently, trust builds and
Janice Porter:trust is what opens doors. Leverage shows up in referrals,
Janice Porter:introductions, collaborations, testimonials, invitations and
Janice Porter:new opportunities. It shows up when someone says, I thought of
Janice Porter:you, or you should meet this person, or you would be perfect
Janice Porter:for this project. The world of business is built on these small
Janice Porter:moments of being remembered. The relationships that you nurture
Janice Porter:today often become the opportunities that appear months
Janice Porter:or years from now. So as you begin the year, think about
Janice Porter:where you can offer value to your network. Who can you
Janice Porter:introduce? Who can you collaborate with? Who can you
Janice Porter:elevate? When you lift others, you strengthen every
Janice Porter:relationship around you, and over time, your network becomes
Janice Porter:a living, breathing source of support and opportunity. And I
Janice Porter:say as an aside to that cherish your network, because as as it's
Janice Porter:been said many times before, your network is your net worth.
Janice Porter:And in closing, I want to encourage you to choose one
Janice Porter:pillar of the real system to focus on, not all four at once,
Janice Porter:just one, refresh your presence, engage with intention,
Janice Porter:appreciate someone who made a difference to you, or gently
Janice Porter:leverage a relationship that is ready for the next step. When
Janice Porter:you lead with connection, everything else unfolds more
Janice Porter:naturally and when you build your business from a place. Of
Janice Porter:genuine care from the heart. You create a foundation that lasts.
Janice Porter:If you want support implementing the real connection system in
Janice Porter:your business, or you want more information about it, I'd love
Janice Porter:to help you reach out and let's explore it together. Thank you
Janice Porter:for joining me for this first episode of the year. I'm excited
Janice Porter:for what is ahead until next time, stay connected and be
Janice Porter:remembered. You.
