Stop Letting Great Content Collect Dust: How to Reignite Old Episodes for Growth | 015
We spend countless hours planning, recording, editing, and promoting our podcast episodes only to watch them fade into the background a week later. The truth is, much of that content is still valuable and can continue serving our audience and business.
In this episode, we talk about how to bring older episodes back to life in a way that feels fresh and intentional. We share strategies like the Encore Approach for republishing popular episodes with updated intros and titles. We also explore creative ways to spotlight past content through themed content weeks, short clips, Flashback Fridays, and email automations. Hey all you Amplifiers. Welcome back to the
Troy Lacher:Podcast Playbook. You know, it's wild. We spend so much time
Troy Lacher:creating podcast content between the hours and hours of planning,
Troy Lacher:the recording, the editing, the publishing, and then finally,
Troy Lacher:the promoting. And then what happens a week later, that
Troy Lacher:episode kind of vanishes from our spotlight. Maybe a handful
Troy Lacher:of people binge your back catalog, but most of it just
Troy Lacher:sits there, collecting digital dust. And that's a shame,
Troy Lacher:because some of that old content, it's gold, like, super
Troy Lacher:valuable. So today I want to talk to you about how you can
Troy Lacher:put those older episodes back to work without feeling like you're
Troy Lacher:just recycling because this isn't about being lazy, it's
Troy Lacher:about being smart. So let's go into how to turn your past
Troy Lacher:episodes into fresh momentum for your podcast and your business.
Troy Lacher:So first off, let's look at why reusing past content is actually
Troy Lacher:a power move. First, your audience has changed, you have
Troy Lacher:grown, you have evolved. Maybe your brand is more dialed in
Troy Lacher:now, maybe your marketing is stronger, but it is guaranteed
Troy Lacher:that you have picked up new listeners along the way, and
Troy Lacher:chances are they haven't heard that golden episode you dropped
Troy Lacher:a year or two back second, some of your topics have gotten more
Troy Lacher:relevant, not less. We've seen this over and over that those
Troy Lacher:episodes that felt niche or early when they first dropped
Troy Lacher:suddenly feel spot on a year later, when the trend shift or
Troy Lacher:industries catch up, and third, and this is the big one. You
Troy Lacher:already know. What works if a past episode got great feedback
Troy Lacher:or high downloads, that's a signal. That's your audience
Troy Lacher:raising their hand and saying, Yes, more of this. So why not
Troy Lacher:give it to them again, but with little twist?
Troy Lacher:First off, we're going to talk about the Encore strategy. You
Troy Lacher:know, republishing with purpose. Think of this like your podcast,
Troy Lacher:graded Hits album, but don't just slap it back on the feed.
Troy Lacher:We're not trying to phone it in here, but instead, it is very
Troy Lacher:intentional. This is a curated encore. So how do you do that?
Troy Lacher:Step one, picking the right episode. So go back and look at
Troy Lacher:your episodes. Look for episodes that performed really well in
Troy Lacher:downloads or on social media shares, that have evergreen
Troy Lacher:value. So this is stuff that's still relevant and useful today.
Troy Lacher:Tie in with what you're currently promoting or talking
Troy Lacher:about, and solve a problem that your audience still has. Go back
Troy Lacher:to your podcast host and pull up your lifetime stats. What are
Troy Lacher:your top 10 episodes? That's your short list, right there.
Troy Lacher:Step two, record a new intro. This is where you set the
Troy Lacher:context. Let people know this is a re release, but it's on
Troy Lacher:purpose. Give it a little story. For example, Hey, friends, this
Troy Lacher:episode originally aired back in 2022 but I keep getting
Troy Lacher:questions about this exact topic, so I wanted to bring it
Troy Lacher:back to the top of the feed, because the strategies still
Troy Lacher:work, and honestly they're even more relevant today. For
Troy Lacher:example, that small touch goes a long way in showing that you do
Troy Lacher:care and you continue to build trust with your audience. Step
Troy Lacher:three, repackage the title and description. This part is so
Troy Lacher:underrated, if you leave the same old headline, people are
Troy Lacher:going to scroll past, so refresh it, make it timely. For example,
Troy Lacher:our original episode was how to build a lead magnet that
Troy Lacher:converts the Encore, clean it up, make it more exciting, but
Troy Lacher:let them also know that it is a redo. So back by demand, the
Troy Lacher:lead magnet strategy that's still bringing in clients today.
Troy Lacher:The same goes. For the episode description, summarize the value
Troy Lacher:and include an updated call to action, very important,
Troy Lacher:especially if you've got a current offer, new lead magnet
Troy Lacher:or a new promo running step four, upload it as a new episode
Troy Lacher:that puts it right at the top of your feed triggers your
Troy Lacher:subscribers apps and gives you a reason to promote it again. Just
Troy Lacher:be transparent. Label it as an encore episode or a throwback
Troy Lacher:presentation. People actually appreciate that clarity.
Troy Lacher:Now maybe you don't want to re upload the episode. That's cool.
Troy Lacher:There's still so much you can do to spotlight it again. Here's
Troy Lacher:what works well, create a themed content week, pick two or three
Troy Lacher:older episodes around the same topic. Say it's around
Troy Lacher:attracting coaching clients or launching your first offer and
Troy Lacher:feature them in a mini series. Use your email, Instagram,
Troy Lacher:stories, carousel posts, whatever you've got. Go back and
Troy Lacher:create new clips for this old episode. So go back and pull out
Troy Lacher:those 30 to 62nd mic drop moments from older episodes and
Troy Lacher:turn them into audio, grams reels, tick tocks, book
Troy Lacher:graphics. Use tools like Opus clips, descript, and if you
Troy Lacher:record on Riverside magic clips, those will help find those
Troy Lacher:little magic moments really quickly, so you don't have to go
Troy Lacher:searching for them yourselves. And then, of course, you can use
Troy Lacher:Canva to create your graphics for your quotes and that type of
Troy Lacher:thing. Use your past episodes as part of your email automations.
Troy Lacher:So let's say you've got a welcome series or a nurture
Troy Lacher:sequence that you have automatically when new people
Troy Lacher:sign up, plug a few past episodes in there, especially
Troy Lacher:ones that share your origin story. Give a quick win, address
Troy Lacher:a major pain point that your ideal client feels. Don't wait
Troy Lacher:for people to dig through your catalog. Serve it up for those
Troy Lacher:of you that have worked with amplify you to launch your
Troy Lacher:podcast. Those episodes are usually within our first four
Troy Lacher:framework that we give you. So take a look at that and use that
Troy Lacher:as part of your emails. Do a Flashback Friday feature. So
Troy Lacher:make this a weekly thing, if you want. So you can do a quick post
Troy Lacher:such as Flashback Friday. This episode on building trust with
Troy Lacher:your audience is still one of the most downloaded if you
Troy Lacher:missed it or just need a refresh. This is your sign. So
Troy Lacher:it's just simple things like that to highlight a very quick
Troy Lacher:past episode. This helps you get visibility consistency, and
Troy Lacher:makes you feel like you're not scrambling for something new.
Troy Lacher:All right, so now let's look at turning old content into new
Troy Lacher:assets. How can we do that? This is where you can take it up a
Troy Lacher:notch. So one turn your episodes into blog posts. We've talked
Troy Lacher:about this in a previous episode recently. So get your episodes
Troy Lacher:transcribed. If they're not already, clean them up and boom,
Troy Lacher:you've got SEO content. It helps the discoverability gives you
Troy Lacher:something to link to, and reinforces your authority.
Troy Lacher:Bundle episodes into lead magnets, grab a few related
Troy Lacher:episodes, maybe add a worksheet or a checklist and offer it as a
Troy Lacher:freebie, like the podcasting playbook for entrepreneurs or a
Troy Lacher:five part audio series, how to attract clients with your voice
Troy Lacher:now your old episodes are rebuilding or building up your
Troy Lacher:email list, host of live training based on a past
Troy Lacher:episode. So use this episode as your pre work. Then go live to
Troy Lacher:walk through the content with your audience, take questions,
Troy Lacher:go deeper. This will help build massive engagement and again,
Troy Lacher:that no like and trust factor. So here's what I want you to
Troy Lacher:take away from this. Your content library isn't just a
Troy Lacher:record of what you've done. It's a resource. It's a toolkit
Troy Lacher:you've already put in the work. Don't let it sit on the shelf.
Troy Lacher:Go pull one of those golden episodes back into the
Troy Lacher:spotlight, add a new intro, share a story around it, or just
Troy Lacher:repackage it and let it serve someone who needs it today,
Troy Lacher:because odds are the right person hasn't heard it yet.
Troy Lacher:And if you want help making your podcast. Work harder for your
Troy Lacher:business without working harder yourself. That's what we do at
Troy Lacher:amplify you. We help you. Turn one episode into an entire
Troy Lacher:marketing ecosystem. So don't be shy, reach out. Let's talk. You
Troy Lacher:can book call. The link is in the show notes. And also, with
Troy Lacher:this episode, we have a repurpose roadmap checklist that
Troy Lacher:you can download for free. Check out the show notes for the link.
Troy Lacher:So until next time, keep showing up, keep sharing your voice and
Troy Lacher:remember that great content never expires.
