Discovery Calls: The Podcast Conversion Strategy You May Be Overlooking | 013
We often think great content alone will bring clients, but we’ve learned that’s not enough. Podcasts are trust-building machines, and we need to give our listeners a clear next step. Your strongest lead magnet to turning listeners into clients is a discovery call. When we invite listeners to a low-pressure, high-value discovery call, we create a bridge from inspiration to action.
We break down why discovery calls outperform generic CTAs, how to script them naturally, where to place them for maximum impact, and how to follow up so listeners feel supported, not sold to. With a smart discovery call strategy, we’re not just boosting downloads, we’re turning listeners into clients and fueling real business growth.

Hey, amplifiers, welcome back to the podcast
Troy Lacher:playbook, where we give you the real tools to build a podcast
Troy Lacher:that drives results. So today, I want to talk to you about
Troy Lacher:something that we hear a lot about from our clients. So for
Troy Lacher:those of you who don't know, the vast majority of the clients
Troy Lacher:that we work with are entrepreneurs, leaders, coaches,
Troy Lacher:people who are using their podcast in order to convert
Troy Lacher:listeners into clients.
Troy Lacher:So one of the big questions that we get asked is, why does it
Troy Lacher:feel like their content isn't quite converting, and so today I
Troy Lacher:want to talk about a powerful fix to that. So the podcast
Troy Lacher:isn't just about your content, it's also about how you lead
Troy Lacher:your listeners into providing high value leads for them. So
Troy Lacher:one of the things that we have talked about in past episode, I
Troy Lacher:believe, episode number 11, we talked about lead magnets. So
Troy Lacher:today I want to talk about your strongest lead magnet that you
Troy Lacher:have, and that is a discovery call, alright? So here's the
Troy Lacher:thing, podcasts aren't just long form content, they're trust
Troy Lacher:building machines. So according to Edison Research, 67% of
Troy Lacher:Americans listen to podcasts, and over half of them trust the
Troy Lacher:host when it comes to promotions or recommendations. So if you're
Troy Lacher:just casually tossing a CTA at the end, like, check out my
Troy Lacher:website. Follow me on socials, share this episode. You're
Troy Lacher:leaving those conversions on the table. Those aren't the ones
Troy Lacher:that are sure they'll get them to check out your podcast
Troy Lacher:website and then hopefully check out the other things that you
Troy Lacher:have on your website. But it's not enough to give them an
Troy Lacher:actual step to work on. So instead, give them just one
Troy Lacher:clear step, and that is personalized, low pressure, high
Troy Lacher:value, Discovery call. Think of it as a bridge from inspiration
Troy Lacher:to conversation.
Troy Lacher:So here's why a discovery call actually works. For one it's
Troy Lacher:personal. You're inviting them in for a one to one chat during
Troy Lacher:this you're not going to be pitching, you're not going to be
Troy Lacher:selling. You're just there to help them solve a problem. It's
Troy Lacher:low risk. You know, it's free, besides your time for that bit,
Troy Lacher:but it's short, and it feels like a gift, not a grab, and
Troy Lacher:it's measurable. So you can set up a custom link in order for
Troy Lacher:them to book this discovery call with you, and that way, you can
Troy Lacher:track how many calls are actually coming from your
Troy Lacher:podcast to this. And when you make it super clear, like book
Troy Lacher:your free 20 minute strategy call to uncover your next three
Troy Lacher:growth moves, you give them a reason to act now. So I just
Troy Lacher:kind of want to go over the framework to your CTA to help do
Troy Lacher:this. And I'm going to be using my examples are going to be for
Troy Lacher:as if I was pitching for people who are coming to work with us
Troy Lacher:to amplify you.
Troy Lacher:So just to kind of give you an idea how this would work. So
Troy Lacher:here's a simple three part structure to make your CTA flow
Troy Lacher:naturally. One, start with a hook. This is going to be your
Troy Lacher:listeners pain point, or that burning question they need to
Troy Lacher:answered. So, for example, struggling to grow your audience
Troy Lacher:even with great content. So that's my hook. Two, I'm going
Troy Lacher:to offer value. So this is dropping a tip or an insight
Troy Lacher:that builds your credibility. So for mine, it would be, you know,
Troy Lacher:most podcasters don't realize it's their CTA that's broken,
Troy Lacher:not their content. Then three bridge to your CTA. So if you
Troy Lacher:want help creating a CTA that actually converts, I'll help you
Troy Lacher:map it out in a free discovery call links in the show notes. So
Troy Lacher:that last part is key. You're not selling. You're offering to
Troy Lacher:go deeper with them, and because they already trust your voice,
Troy Lacher:you're. Eliminating that barrier to entry, you're giving them
Troy Lacher:that opportunity to actually come work with you without any
Troy Lacher:full commitment on their behalf. So this is just a lead in for
Troy Lacher:you. You're going to give them just that little tidbit. You're
Troy Lacher:not giving them your full services. You're just offering
Troy Lacher:to help one small part of something bigger for them.
Troy Lacher:So the next question is, where do we place the CTA so
Troy Lacher:typically, most CTAs are placed at the end of the episode.
Troy Lacher:However, if you're doing a 20 to 40 minutes or even longer
Troy Lacher:episode, feel free to put a CTA in the middle. So this is when
Troy Lacher:your listener is fully engaged. So having a quick break to give
Troy Lacher:them hey, we've talked about this, and now we're offering
Troy Lacher:this right? So in the end, you are giving them two CTAs, one in
Troy Lacher:the middle and one at the end, for those who stick around and
Troy Lacher:it's the last thing they hear. And when it's the last thing
Troy Lacher:they hear, it's something that is more memorable and more
Troy Lacher:conducive to action. So yes, you can AB test your CTAs to try
Troy Lacher:different phrases, tweak your urgency or highlight different
Troy Lacher:benefits that they can get. So for example, spots fail fast,
Troy Lacher:book your free call today. Or I've helped dozens of coaches go
Troy Lacher:from 10 downloads to 10k want in, so test it, track it, and
Troy Lacher:then, of course, tweak it to make sure that it works for you.
Troy Lacher:So what happens after they book? Okay, so someone's now booked
Troy Lacher:your call. What do you do now? Don't leave them hanging. Build
Troy Lacher:a short nurture sequence to reinforce trust. So make sure
Troy Lacher:that they're getting an immediate confirmation email
Troy Lacher:with calendar details, a couple of warm up emails, tips,
Troy Lacher:testimonials, helpful links, just to kind of encourage them
Troy Lacher:to really focus on what they're going to talk about with you.
Troy Lacher:Send out a reminder with reschedule options, just in case
Troy Lacher:everybody knows life happens and then the discovery call itself
Troy Lacher:is just 20 to 30 minutes of your time. Keep it casual, keep it
Troy Lacher:helpful and insightful, and then you have your post call, so then
Troy Lacher:you can follow up with a tailored proposal for them. Hey,
Troy Lacher:like, I hope you found this helpful. We can go deeper into
Troy Lacher:this and what are the next steps. So this process should be
Troy Lacher:simple, repeatable, and, of course, convertible.
Troy Lacher:All right, so let's talk about the next steps. What is your
Troy Lacher:action plan that you're going to do in order to bring this
Troy Lacher:discovery call CTA into place. So one first thing I want you to
Troy Lacher:do is go back and take a look at your last five episodes. Did you
Troy Lacher:have a CTA actually involved in your episodes? Now, if you're
Troy Lacher:amplified, you clients, you definitely have it in your
Troy Lacher:outro, but are you using it within your mid roll as well?
Troy Lacher:Okay, two, I want you to sit down and write two discovery
Troy Lacher:call scripts in your own voice. You are the one who's recording
Troy Lacher:these. You are the one writing them in the reason why I say two
Troy Lacher:is so that we you can do some AB testing to see which one
Troy Lacher:actually is going to convert more. All right. Three, when
Troy Lacher:you're recording these, mix the ad with music. So if it's in
Troy Lacher:your outro already perfect. It's already mixed with music, more
Troy Lacher:than likely, or it could be at the very end of your interview,
Troy Lacher:and just adding it in with that before your actual ongoing
Troy Lacher:outro, if you're going to do a mid roll ad, mix it with music.
Troy Lacher:So that stands apart from the actual interview, so people can
Troy Lacher:hear that break that they know that this is something to pay
Troy Lacher:attention to. Okay, create your tracking link. So however you're
Troy Lacher:going to do it, if you are inviting them to call, create a
Troy Lacher:separate link for. Of that call so that you know who's coming
Troy Lacher:through through your podcast, all right, and then add your CTA
Troy Lacher:everywhere. Make sure it's in your show notes. Make sure it's
Troy Lacher:in your transcripts. And if you're doing YouTube or videos,
Troy Lacher:make sure it's inside those as well. And that can be your reels
Troy Lacher:if you're doing invites online, and then review your data, look
Troy Lacher:at your clicks, your bookings, your show up rate for those who
Troy Lacher:did book, and then tweak re record if need to be and refine
Troy Lacher:and then finally celebrate the wins and do more of what works.
Troy Lacher:So here's what I want you to take away today, your listeners
Troy Lacher:aren't just listeners. They're your future clients, and they're
Troy Lacher:just waiting for the right next step to take, and when you guide
Troy Lacher:them there with a smart, intentional discovery call,
Troy Lacher:you're not just growing downloads, you're growing your
