Mardi Winder-Adams:

Welcome to the D shift podcast, where we provide inspiration, motivation and education to help you transition from the challenges of divorce to discover the freedom and ability to live life on your own terms. Are you ready? Let's get this shift started. Hello, and welcome to another episode of the D Shift podcast. And I am so excited to have fellow Canadian Melissa Deally, and fellow British Columbia residents. Listen daily talking to us today about her area of expertise. And Melissa is an integrative mind body health practitioner and toxin Slayer. And I love that term. I'm dying to hear more about that. And Melissa is also host of her own podcast, don't wait for your wake up call. And it is a phenomenal podcast, I have listened into several episodes and have learned an awful lot. So Melissa, thank you so much for being here.

Melissa Deally:

It's absolutely my pleasure. Thank you for having me, Marty.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

Well, and we're gonna we're gonna dive right in. But before we get started, can you tell us a little bit specifically about this toxin Slayer stuff? What got you here, what your area of passion is? And I know you've got a lot of expertise in this area. So what do you think we need to know about you?

Melissa Deally:

Well, let me share a toxin Slayer because that's a new term that I've been using. It's one that I'm really having fun playing with, because you know, integrative mind body health practitioner, and that's pretty boring. And it doesn't really tell people what I do, right. So what a toxin Slayer is, is that I'm helping you create freedom from the chaos of life and life stressors, which we all have, right? I'm the catalyst in guiding you through the most toxic parts of your life, toxic behaviors, toxic food, toxic relationships, and simply the toxins that are getting into your body from our air, water, etc, etc. And all of this is weighing you down holding you back from achieving your dreams. So I show you the way to come out the other side stronger, healthier, more connected to your emotions, your mind and your body. And I always start with the physical body because that's the place where people are generally ready to start, there's symptoms going on often as well that are indicating that they need to start and I do have a toxic load quiz that we'll share with the audience. So people can become aware of their symptoms, because very often, our body's talking to us. And we're not listening, because we've got all these other stresses going on in our life, and we're trying to move through it, right. But we start detoxing that physical body, and that's opening up detox pathways. And then we move into the emotional and the mental bodies as well. Because if we don't address all of it, we just end up back where we started, right. And so we do have to address all of it because those squash down emotions, they become toxic in the body. The mental toxicity, the way we talk to ourselves becomes a habit and we need to be breaking that habit releasing those limiting beliefs, releasing those stuffed down emotions, and we can do all of that using the power of our unconscious mind. And it's very quick and effective and lasting. And also powerful and helping people going through big transitions in their life like a divorce to come out the other side in a much better space and not have to worry about ending up back where they started.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

I love you know I so I believe that the mind body spirit connection is the key to managing a lot of chronic health conditions. Because you're right when you know when your body is stressed that's going to emotionally and mentally and spiritually drain you. And if you're mentally distressed, your physical body reacts right? You know, when you're under stress, what do you do you get every single cold that's going around every single flu. And I just think it's kind of fascinating how ancient peoples groups cultures before there was any modern medicine any you know, CAT scans or MRIs, they had this stuff all figured out and then we kind of just let it all go. So I'm so happy that this is kind of a focus. That will and I everybody's coming back sorry. And that I love

Melissa Deally:

that you say that because I to look at Chinese traditional medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, Latin American cultures and what they're still doing to this day, right in terms of detoxing not only the body but the mind the emotions, this their spirituality, because there's so much value in it and look at where all the chronic illness in the world is. It's in the Western cultures that believe that it's enough to simply have a shower and wash our outer body and we completely ignore our inner body and in many cases were ignore During the emotional, the mental, the spiritual. And what's interesting is, when symptoms show up in the physical body, they've already moved through the spiritual, the mental and the emotional body. And we're still not listening, right? And so when I'm working with people, I'm teaching them to listen to their body to get curious to stop writing our emotions off or ignoring them as normal, normal signs of aging. That symptom is my genetics, that symptom is seasonal allergies, right? That's what society has taught us to do. And that it's normal to feel worse as we get older. And that is not true at all. What we need to do is listen to our symptoms, get curious, why do I have this symptom, and then start looking for the answers. And so that's where the other aspect of my work comes in, which is looking for the root cause the functional medicine at home labs that I work with, that literally people can do in their home. And that shows me the imbalances in the body, the deficiencies in the body, the toxicities in the body, when we remove the toxicities, we remove the deficiencies by supporting our mineral levels, our vitamin levels, and we remove other toxins, usually, maybe it's bacterial overgrowth, maybe it's candida overgrowth, right? All of this, I can see in the labs, when we bring the body back into balance. Once we know where it's out of balance, the body can heal itself. That's what it's designed to do. But when the body is too depleted because of high stress, poor nutrition, or sleep, We've burned through our minerals, we burned through our vitamins, we're not feeling ourselves properly, the body doesn't have any energy left to be able to heal itself. Right? Yeah,

Mardi Winder-Adams:

that's so insightful. And I like the fact that that the tests, the labs that you do, can be done at home, and then do then work with people to interpret those risks and understand how to implement the changes. And exactly, I'm guessing, because I know you, I've talked to you several times. I'm guessing you just don't say hey, I think you should take a commercially available multivitamin once a day. That's not That's not clearing up problems, is it? Melissa?

Melissa Deally:

It's not. And first of all, the supplement industry is a very tough industry to navigate. Because there's an aspect of it that is for profit, where companies are not using the most bioavailable form of the ingredient, meaning the body can absorb it, well, they're using the cheap version that the body doesn't absorb well, because it's cheaper. So it increases their profit margin, right. And they might be using an ingredient that they know people are looking for. But they don't put enough in for the body to actually do anything with they just put enough in so that they're allowed to write it on the label, right. And so you get what you pay for when it comes to supplements. If the supplements cheap, it's probably not doing you very much good. But if you know where to get your supplements, the functional medicine brands where the supplements are being made, for the purpose of optimizing human health by doctors that want that for you, then you know that you're getting what your body needs, and you will feel a difference. You're not supposed to just take supplements and not notice anything, they do make a difference when you have a good quality supplement. And in addition to that, I also don't just read the lab and say, here now go do it and expect you to do it. Because that's the gap I saw on the market. Even in working with my own naturopath. What I do is I work with people over a series of sessions and they can buy the number of sessions that they want. So that you always have the accountability and providing recipes if we're changing the way that you eat. And I'm doing follow up sessions with you. If we're changing protocols or you know, maybe you need some help with your sleep, maybe you need some help with nutrition, maybe you need help with exercise, maybe you need help with calming your nervous system and getting out of that stress state. So this is all education that I share with you with accountability with habit change, in easy steps, as I guide you through and hold your hand.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

Love that. And that is really that accountability factor is really critical. A lot of the clients I work with Type A personalities high achieving 60 hours, 70 hour 80 hour workweeks plus managing a divorce plus now being a single parent, managing the children or managing the kids that sounds so horrible, taking care of their their kids in a loving way, I should say, you know, all these kinds of stuff. How do you get that particular group of people? And if you are one of those people listen to this answer. How do you get them to acknowledge that they need to make your health a priority? Not not their business, not their, you know, retirement portfolio, not their 401 K plan, whatever they got going, how do you how do you work with people to help them understand that health priority and how it affects all quadrants of their life?

Melissa Deally:

Well, first of all, when I work with people is generally about a two hour intake, where we go deep, what is it that you really want? Not on the surface level where you're living your life trying to survive in the hamster wheel? What do you really want? Okay. And then we can lay out a plan of what it's going to take to get you there. And the big question is, are you willing to change? Are you willing to trust in the guidance? And if they are not answering yes, there, then I will send them away with some tips, some suggestions, and they come back when they're ready, right, because I can't do it for them. They have to be willing to do it for themselves. But sometimes they first have to be shown what's truly deeply important to them. And what happens when they don't get that. And so that's all part of the conversation in the intake. It's not just an intake about your health history. It's an intake into what you really want, who benefits when you get what you really want, who maybe suffers when you get what you really want, because that's something to factor in as well, right? And what happens if you don't get what you really want, and then highlighting that for people, because that's something that they often haven't stopped to think about. And then getting their willingness to change. And from there, it's baby steps, we don't do it all at once. That would just send the amygdala into freakout mode, right, and then crash and burn, right, but we start taking baby steps. And so between each session, they are doing things that are shifting them towards what it is that they really want. While we're also looking at removing those, you know, mental and emotional toxins, because those can be blocks as we start to create this change. So we have to remove them along the way. But the starting point, the easiest starting point for people, and just about every single person on the planet needs this because unfortunately, we do live in a toxic world, we've had 144,000 manmade toxins come into our world since just World War Two. And it's bogging down our livers bogging down our kidneys, causing all sorts of liver disease inflammation in the body, which is then triggering our genes to turn on disease, which doesn't have to happen if we were able to keep our body clean on the inside, right. So I guide people through a detox, and it's a very high level of support, guiding them every step of the way, with recipes, making it as easy as possible for people, people can do this, all people can do this. And when they do that, they start feeling better in their physical body. Depending on the individual, it may be less aches and pains, it may be more mental clarity and less brain fog. It might be better sleep, more energy, et cetera, et cetera. It depends on the individual. But just that shift is a powerful shift in people recognizing that I can do this, and I need to do this for me. Because again, it comes down to there's no point building your business. If you're just going to burn yourself out, right? You're not there for your loved ones. And if you burn yourself out, you can't run your business in that state of health. Right. Right. So it is a conversation, a deep conversation around what people want, and the mindset shift that has to happen, and then slowly starting to shift that in order to have them see another path.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

Yeah. Fantastic. So when you get and I'm going to I'm going to switch gears a little bit with regards to the the emotional detox, what what does that entail, and I'm sure that's very different than a like a dietary or physical detox.

Melissa Deally:

Right. So both the mental and emotional detoxes. I'm using tools and techniques from NLP Neuro Linguistic Programming, as well as timeline therapy, and even hypnotherapy. And so which tools and techniques I'm using, again, depends on each individual. Although I will use timeline therapy with every individual. As well as hypnotherapy, we always end with the hypnotherapy as we're creating the new of what people want and planting those seeds into the unconscious mind. But first, we are removing the negative emotions. And we do that through timeline therapy. And we're also removing the limiting beliefs, which we all have, right. And we want to remove them and then plant the new beliefs so that we can move forward with that freedom with that confidence with that power. Knowing that yes, this is who I am today. I think of us as being like computers or phones, right? We have software on your computer and then it becomes outdated and we have to upgrade it. Right and our Our brains are very similar. Our unconscious mind files, every single experience that we've ever had in our life without judgment. And that age of zero to six was a highly impressionable age when we were trying to figure out the world around us. And we created ideas of what it was and created beliefs that we're holding on to, or emotions from events that have remained unprocessed that we're holding on to. And our unconscious mind can now highlight those for us, so that we know what they are. And we can upgrade because they're no longer serving us, right. And so we simply upgrade to where we want to go. And what we want. Now, as adults. And things are always coming into our unconscious mind. And things are always, you know, needing to be updated. But the biggest initial start is looking at that age from zero to six. The more we do this, the better we get at it. Sometimes people are going back into past lives, or things that are handed down Genie logically to us, right to release it, because all of that is baggage. Very powerful tools. I'm just gonna say they're very powerful tools.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

I am so excited about this conversation. Can you tell I'm just jumping in on top for you every time? What can you just? Can you just give me because I know nothing about timeline therapy. Can you just sort of like a general explanation of what that entails? When you when you use that tool? Yes.

Melissa Deally:

So when I use the tool, I'm never just jumping into it with someone I'm teaching them how to access their unconscious mind, etc. Because many people have never worked with their unconscious mind don't even know that they can. But what we're doing is we are it's called a timeline because we can actually travel back. So if you think of your life as a, you know, a movie screen, and you were to close your eyes, right now you could travel back to an event that happened, you know, five years ago, right? And see it, and you could travel back to an event that happened when you were six years old and see it right? Well, there are memories that we don't have in our conscious mind that our unconscious mind still has. And so when we work with our unconscious mind, we can travel back into memories even younger than six years old. Wow. We can also travel forward and we can envision and see our future, you know, what do you want in the future? You can see that in your mind's eye. Right? So this is movement along our timeline that people are doing naturally as they think about memories, or they think about their future. And they don't realize that they're doing it. But when I guide someone through it, and I take them to a specific time where their unconscious mind is taking them not me to a specific time where there's some, you know, emotion that's harbored in the body that hasn't been released. I'm asking them, What is the lessons that are what are the lessons that you needed to learn in that moment? I'm not taking them into the moment, like what happens in therapy, where they talk you through it, they have you talk you through it, and that can trigger the trauma over and over again. Right, right. We're looking down from above. So we're seeing it, we're seeing ourselves in the picture below, right, and then learning the lesson. So the unconscious mind is bringing those lessons forth to the conscious mind. And once we have those lessons, we can then release the emotion from that event because we no longer need it because we learned the lesson we needed to learn right? Yeah, and then we can test that we go back a little bit before the event and see if the person still feels the emotion which they shouldn't because the event hadn't happened but we see right then and only then do we drop down into the event to see if there's emotion right and if there is still emotion that's okay, we come back up and we discover what are the additional lessons that still need to come out? Okay, but very often the lessons have clear the emotion and the person can sit in that event with no emotion Okay, that's when we come back Yeah, fascinating I around since about the 1980s and it's a very powerful technique and it's incredible to guide people through this and see the shift in them when they are able to finally release these emotions right right.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

And I can see where that would tie in very well because I am I am NLP as well. So it makes sense how that would tie in with NLP Can I just say and this is this is because this is my personal fascination with this. What if somebody honestly does not have memories of or cannot on their conscious mind anyhow, recall things from the early childhood like I work with people who say I and I don't do any of this stuff. So just full disclosure, but people who will say you know, my sister can remember my brother can remember everything, you know, from our for our Christmases, for years and years and I don't really remember anything until my 12 Christmas. You know, the year I was 12? What what? What's going on for those people? Or is that more of a of a psychiatric question than this? But what what do you do with people that say I don't, I can't remember six, what what's going on with

Melissa Deally:

our own conscious or unconscious mind is keeping us safe and alive all the time, right. And what is also doing is storing every single one of our memories. And it will also repress memories that are not safe in the moment until it deems that they are safe to bring forth to the conscious mind. Okay, so these memories, these people that have these gaps in memories are because those memories have been repressed because at the time, the unconscious mind felt they weren't safe to bring forth to the conscious mind. Right. Thank you. So what, like I said, I don't just jump into timeline therapy with someone, we practice moving along a timeline. First, I teach them about their unconscious mind and getting into their unconscious mind. Because those memories are there in their unconscious mind. We just have to know how to trust in the process and access it. Yeah, which is the work that I do. First, we practice moving along the timeline, and then we take it from there. And you know, some people may not be ready. I, every time I go to release a negative emotion, I first asked, Is it okay with your unconscious mind, for me to release this emotion today? And bring it forth to your conscious mind? And if they don't give me a resounding yes, we don't continue. Okay.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

So it sounds like your, your process, the health, the detox of all aspects of your life is really a customized approach for each one of the people that you're working with.

Melissa Deally:

Absolutely I do for the physical detox, I do run group programs, but the rest of my work is all one to one and very individual. And it's all done virtually, which is fabulous. I don't have to be close to people, because Zoom is so wonderful. We can do all of this over zoom. But it is one to one work.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

And it's very, you know, once you get used to zoom, it's it's not that it's not identical to being in a room with another person. But it's very, very close. You know, and if we had to be in the room together, we would not be able to have this meeting today, you know, exactly, we live in two different countries, we couldn't possibly coordinate this kind of stuff. So this exactly, and you wouldn't be able to listen in from any part of the world or work with anybody from any part of the world. So exactly.

Melissa Deally:

And so that is one thing that I'm very grateful to COVID for because it did advanced us into huge acceptance of using zoom, I was using Zoom before COVID. But people were so much more accepting of it once COVID hit and it happened very quickly, of course, because the whole world went on zoom in March 2020. Right. And you're right, you can build powerful connections through zoom. I just recently had a friend from Nashville, Tennessee, come visit me. And we met in a random breakout room in a functional nutrition course we did together in April 2020. And we've worked together ever since and never met until this month when she came to visit. And that was really cool. You know, it's

Mardi Winder-Adams:

funny. I was fortunate because I was working online before before COVID as well. And I have I have a person I've worked with in the UK for over 20 years we have never met face to face. We have spoken once on the phone. Other than that it's been pretty much an email exchange back and forth. And you know, it's funny how you can build these relationships you need to be face to face. Yes. So Melissa, the work you do is so important. Do you do you think and we're just we're getting close to the end of the time here. But I've got one more thing. I think that that I would like to ask, do you always start with the physical detox first? Or is there a specific sequence that you walk through, walk people through in your program about this?

Melissa Deally:

I like to start with the physical detox first for many people because it sets up it's more of a comfort zone for people, right? They're starting to work with me, they don't really know me yet. They are not sure about how all this, you know, mental and emotional stuff yet. But, you know, they know they need a physical detox. They might have done my quiz. They know their score, they know they have symptoms. And so it's an easy starting point for most people. We can do the physical detox at the same time that we start working on the mental and emotional and that just comes down to people's calendars and how quickly they want to move through this. Or you know how much time they have to start working together right in the beginning. But there are times where people's and I get this from the intake, their emotional or their mental toxicity requires that we start there. There are times that I do that, but it's more Common start with the physical detox.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

So I again, I'm just going to repeat this sounds like this is such a customized approach. And so and I'm I'm guessing that people see results really quickly.

Melissa Deally:

They do they do. I try to get people through the entire program within 12 weeks.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

Wow, wow. So you could literally go from stress overwhelm negative thoughts limiting mindset, unhealthy lifestyle, literally in 12 weeks, be do a complete one ad.

Melissa Deally:

Absolutely. And then have yourself set up for continuing that momentum. Right. So the physical detoxes, we do repeat, because those toxins are always coming in. So you know, I recommend quarterly but the first ones 21 days, if we then do them quarterly, they're just seven days after that. And that just again, keeps them getting keeps those toxins getting back out. So our liver and kidneys are functioning well. And then timeline therapy is also something that you can do maintenance sessions with maybe it's once a month, maybe it's once every couple of months, just because again, the more you do it, the more you get used to working with your unconscious mind, if you're coming up against something that's stopping you or sticking if like okay, what's going on? Right? Let me just go in and investigate. Right.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

And that's what that's what I'm hearing is you are actually training people to do this for the for, for themselves. So in other words, this is not a ongoing process. You're really educating people to be able to move forward. I think that's phenomenal. So that yeah,

Melissa Deally:

definitely, with the timeline therapy, it's generally one session a month with me is my maintenance program, right? But the detox program, yes, people are, they learn how to do it the first time and then they know how to do it. And what I actually offer is our community detoxes. So once people have gone through my guided program, themselves the first time, every quarter, I set the date. So my next one's coming up October 10, to 16th for my community, and I just let people know, this is when I'm running it, jump in and join in. Because it's more fun to do it in community, you know, you're not the only one doing a detox, right. And the recipes are great people do not, you know, feel deprived on my program. But it is nice to have be part of a community. And I just create a little Facebook Messenger group, with the people that have signed up that want to do it. And we all just cheer each other on and share recipes in there. And you know, it's seven days, and it's before you know it, it's all over. And that was easy. And I feel great. And, ya know, I'm on with my life. So, and I don't charge for that, because that's just kind of everybody helping everybody, but I just make the group

Mardi Winder-Adams:

love that. That is that is giving back supporting, helping people. That's, that's terrific. And I'm with you if I can do something, like if I'm doing some kind of a challenge, or like I'm doing an ad the 30 minutes of yoga in 30 days for the cancer societies for the American Cancer. And you know, there's a whole group of people that are, you know, and you get that energy going and exactly ongoing. So can

Melissa Deally:

you're just so much more likely to stick with it. Right, we let ourselves down. So yeah, I mean, people can buy detox kits, and then we'll good intentions, and maybe they start and then on day two, they're like, I really want that chocolate bar or whatever.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

Right? Popcorn with butter is calling to me during the movie. Yeah. And

Melissa Deally:

then it's like, well, who's gonna know? Because nobody even knows I'm doing this. Right? Right. But when you have a group, it's like, okay, well, there are other people doing it. And if they can do it, I can do it too. And I'm in this group with them. I don't want to let them down. Right. And so it just, we will let ourselves down. But we don't let other people down. And so it just holds us accountable. And I started that because I had people tell me, you know, when I did the detox with you the first time I was really good, and I stuck to it, and I felt so great. And then when I did it the second time by myself, I didn't really finish it. Right. And it was only seven days. It wasn't 21 days, but they still didn't really finish it because of all of those reasons. It was just themselves doing it and who would know Yeah, right. Exactly. No, yeah.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

So Melissa, you have been incredibly generous, shared a lot of information, a lot of insight and some good good ideas of what, what we can look out for physical, mental and emotional detox as a toxin Slayer. Master toxin Slayer, we should call you. What kind of takeaway top of the mind idea would you like people to remember from this conversation today?

Melissa Deally:

I would love people to know that. health is your greatest asset. If you don't have your health, you can't build your business. You struggle to you know, care for your children properly, and show up as your best self. And now more than ever, you need to be showing up as your best self. And when you prioritize your health, when you prioritize your self care you You can show up as your best self, you don't have to feel, you know, have sleepless nights and dragging your butt etc. and low energy, you can do something about that. And step into that. Find someone that can guide you and help you through that process. So that you can be your very best self.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

Great. And that's what we want everybody is to be their best self, no matter what stuff is going on in their life so quickly. People want to learn more about you and what you do. What's what's the best place to contact you. I know we've got all of your social media stuff you Were you sent all that. So that is fantastic. That will all be in the show links. What's the best way for people to reach you

Melissa Deally:

simply go to my website, it's your guided health journey.com or email me Melissa at your guided health journey.com. And the other thing too, is do the toxic load quiz, it's really quick and easy to do, it will highlight the symptoms that your body is showing you that you might have been ignoring to the point where you're not even really aware of them until you start answering these questions. And then from there, you'll find out your toxic load score. It might say moderate, it might say severe it might say extreme. Those are all very common answers that I get because we live in a toxic world. But if you do that quiz, you're here you've got a starting point. And you know exactly the next steps that you can take in order to start bringing that number down. Because that is how you really prioritize your health. Yeah.

Mardi Winder-Adams:

Excellent. And the quiz is also in the show links. And I'm going to encourage the show note links, and I would really encourage everybody, right now, drop whatever you're doing. Go take the quiz. Thank you so much, Melissa. Really appreciate you and thanks, everybody for listening to the D ship. Look forward to talking to you next time.

Melissa Deally:

Thanks for having me, Marty.
